Pilgrim passport – Via Francigena

The pilgrim’s credential represents the “pilgrim’s passport”. It attests the identity and motivation of the traveler and is an indispensable tool during the journey.
The pilgrim must have it with him to be identified as such and it is necessary to have the credential to be able to access the reception facilities provided along the route.
In addition, it allows you to take advantage of the agreements with the restaurant activities. Public transport services are also provided in certain regions.
By handing over the credential, in every place where it is hosted, the pilgrim will receive a stamp, useful for the completion of the path and necessary to request the “Testimonium” (you must have traveled at least the last 200km by bike or 100km on foot).

Many structures welcome pilgrims by requiring a simple offer to support the management costs. In other cases, when it comes to accommodation facilities, which offer more services, or public transport, such as trains and buses, generally reductions are applied.
The credential is unique for all the stages of the famous route from England to the last stages of the Via Francigena in Italy.

In fact, there are over 3.000 kilometers of the Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome and towards Santa Maria di Leuca. A path that unites the Europe of peoples and cultures, touching 5 States. The Via crosses Kent in the United Kingdom; the Haute-de-France, Grand Est and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regions in France; the Vaud and Valais cantons in Switzerland; and the Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia regions, in Italy and the Vatican State in Rome.

We recommend the purchase together with the official guide of the Via Francigena. They are in fact the two fundamental objects for walkers traveling along the Via Francigena. The Via Francigena Kits are available with official Guide in Italian, English and French.
