Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Shell
The Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Shell is the symbol of the way and consists of the valves of the scallop. The shell is also known as the sea comb or comb of Santiago.
Find the Santiago Pilgrim Shell on the streets along with the yellow arrow to indicate the path.
Together with the stick and saddlebag, the shell was the sign of recognition of the pilgrim. It seems that in ancient times the pilgrims ate scallops and kept the shell.
The shell of the scallop had the function of “glass” to be used during the journey and was also a symbol of life, rebirth and purification.
Do you have the pilgrim’s credential?
You can add to your cart the Credential, or buy the Kit: Credential and Pilgrim Shell together.
The Credential of the Cammino di Santiago de Compostela represents the “passport of the pilgrim” and is the fundamental document. Thanks to this “passport” it attests to the identity and motivation of the traveler, and is therefore an indispensable tool: the pilgrim must have his credential with him to be identified as such.
