Together with the stick and saddlebag, the shell was the sign of recognition of the pilgrim. It seems that in ancient times the pilgrims ate scallops and kept the shell.

The shell of the scallop had the function of “glass” to be used during the journey and was also a symbol of life, rebirth and purification.
